Some people do not like the taste of distilled water, as distilled water is the purest form of water to drink. This means that all minerals and chemicals have been removed, leaving you with nothing but pure H20. Distilled water is often described as tasting flat.
To me distilled water versus tap water after drinking distilled water for about a year now is preferred. I often pour a glass of tap water from the sink to just smell it, and I can’t believe I used to drink this. The smell of chlorine hits me strongly.
This is where this article comes in to make drinking distilled water taste better. I will provide you with some “tricks” to help you get the best tasting distilled water.
Buy A Water Distiller
Believe it or not, distilling your own water will taste better than buying gallons of plastic jugs full of distilled water. This is my number one tip for improving the taste of distilled water.
Why is this?
Well, plastic has a taste and it can also leach chemicals into the water. Ask anyone who has not drunk from plastic containers in a long time and they will immediately taste it. Most people are just accustomed to the taste and their taste buds don’t pick it up anymore.
Distilled water that you buy in stores that usually comes in plastic gallon containers is often stored and transported in uncontrolled environments. Often in unbearable heat and cold, this leads to the plastic leaching even more chemicals into the water. We have all heard about the unhealthy effects of leaving a water bottle in a hot car for any length of time and the chemicals that are leached into the water.
I recently wrote an article reviewing the best home water distillers available on the market today. You can read more here, Top 10 Water Distillers 2018.
I purchased the Megahome Countertop Water Distiller Stainless, Glass Collection for my self and I am extremely happy with this purchase.
If you’re looking for the cleanest healthiest distilled water due yourself a favor and purchase your own water distiller. This is the first step to get the best tasting water.
Buy Glass Containers, Not Plastic!!
A clean glass container is the best material for storing water, point-blank. It will not leach chemicals into the water, as the glass is really quite stable and will not impart any containments into the water.
The only three tradeoffs with switching to storing your water in glass are is it is heavier than plastic, it could break if you drop it, and it is more expensive than a plastic container. There are always presents with just about anything, the pros, and the cons. To get good-tasting water, glass is required and I feel the tradeoffs are worth it.
They make all kinds of sizes if a one-gallon glass jug is too heavy for you. Thankfully, Amazon sells a wide assortment of glass containers in which to store and drink water.
I have personally purchased four Home Brew Ohio Glass Water Bottle with caps for a reduced price. The more you buy, the cheaper the final price. I also store these in my second refrigerator, so they don’t interfere with my main fridge storage space.
Drink It Cold
Just as I mentioned above, I store my water in the fridge. Why? You guessed it…it tastes better. To me, water tastes a ton better cold than warm or hot. It’s a simple and effective method of making water taste better.
If you find yourself not particularly liking the taste of distilled water, try putting it in the fridge and then trying it to see if you like it better. I’d rather drink cold water anyways.
Also, you can add ice to it to bring down the temperature. Just be sure that the ice is made from distilled water.
Add Fruit & Berries
Fruit/berries are an amazing addition to any water. Not only does it add a subtle flavor enhancement but it’s healthier and it just looks amazing. This will really boost the flavor without the added sugar, as most juices are heavily laden with sugar.
You can try fruits or berries you have grown personally or fresh fruit from the store or even frozen fruit. It all works just try to get the best sourced fruit/berries you can.
Try your favorite fruits or berries or any combinations of the two.

Add Some Herbs…
This is one of the healthiest and tastiest secrets to making water taste better.
Adding herbs to your drink is one of the most underutilized methods of increasing any water’s taste. It is more common in mixed alcohol drinks than water but adding herbs to water adds something special. A great taste with health benefits to boot.
I regularly add my homegrown herbs to my distilled water that I take to work during the spring and summer months. I usually add two or three of my herbs to my insulated container along with ice to have an ultra-refreshing drink.
Get A Muddler
You can simply just add them to your water and they impart their flavors…or for a better way is to use a muddler. This is used often by bartenders to impart flavors into drinks by basically smashing fruits and herbs in a bottom of a glass. Think of it as a pestle, and it comes in a wide variety of materials. Seriously, invest in a muddler.

I have tried some commercially produced water additives. Some are not that good and others are amazing. I would like to share the ones I like.
True Lemon
This is an amazing product!
True Lemon has products that I can really get behind. They sell these little packets, the size of most common sugar packets that you add to water to boost flavor. The packets contain crystallized citrus products, that is easily mixed with water or even for cooking. They have a total of 13 different flavors and they all taste amazing. These little packets can be taken anywhere with you.

Not only do they taste great but they have little to no calories. They are low on sugar and contain NO artificial sweeteners, flavors, preservatives, gluten, or sodium.
This is a great way to enjoy a variety of citrus flavors when you’re out of fresh citrus at home. I first bought a 10-count box of their True Lemon, just to try it out but after experiencing the flavor I quickly bought their 500-count box. This will last a really long time and is a great option for saving money. They have packets in 12-count, 32-count, 100-count, 500-count, and 1000-count boxes.
Very reasonable prices I might add.
Pique Tea
If you like to drink tea this is a great way to enjoy ultra-portable instant tea on the go, it also comes in these little neat packets. They have a total of eight different flavors to choose from.
The tea is crystallized at the peak of freshness to ensure the maximum amount of taste and nutrients. This concentrated tea also boasts six times the antioxidants of brewed tea and 20 times the antioxidants of bottled tea.
I highly recommend you try their Pique Starter Kit, as this has all the flavors to see which one you like the best.
